When we think of military veterans, the picture we often create in our mind is of the elderly WWII survivor, and while they are honourable and deserving of the
respect they receive, there are generations of veterans since then who also deserve our respect, our admiration and our support. These photographs show those veterans today.

Being ex-military, from a military family this panel means everything to me. Each of these veterans were asked to attend wearing something that related to their daily life today, but to bring something with them that linked back to their military service. Some brought medals, some brought their beret, but Evan, Retired
Regimental Sergeant Major brought a chair with the colours of the Green
Howards. The extraverted Andy, a retired Naval Weapons Specialist wore a
Hawaiian shirt with his ship on it, and a respirator he ‘acquired’ when he left the Navy. The military link for both Jason and Bernard is their forearm tattoos, a
permanent reminder of the time they served.

Elizabeth is retired from the Household Cavalry where she served as The Princess Royal’s Charger. Throughout her career Elizabeth took part in many state and
ceremonial duties including The Royal Wedding in 2011 and Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee Parade.  Stikky is a retired Army High Assurance Search Dog (bomb disposal!!). He’s now 14 years old and lives a wonderful retirement with his dog handler Sam, the lady next to him.

I first met ‘Leggy’, Wayne Skill, in 1989 when we both started our military service with the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers in Arborfield at Basic Training. He retired from the Army after 19 years and 6 tours. He now works for Mercedes and misses the camaraderie and sense of belonging that only the military can give.

All of these veterans served their country; they have stories to tell and have the scars to prove it… and they are all around us, in plain sight.

“Courage is the first of human qualities because
it is the quality that guarantees all the others.”
― Winston Churchill
